Do you live inside an apartment or townhouse? If so, the thought of some fresh vegetables you’ve grown yourself may seem like a far off dream. However, no dream is impossible! As long as you have a window that gets a couple of hours of sunlight, you can absolutely grow indoor vegetables. You can even invest in a cheap heat lamp and a UV bulb to stand in for sunlight if you need too. Here are some of the best veggies to grow indoors!
Spinach
Spinach is one of those plants that you can grow in little sunlight and shady areas. All you need is a decent sized pot (about one gallon), compost, good drainage, and of course your spinach seeds. Spinach can also survive cold temperatures very well, and this makes them great if your home happens to reside on the cool side. Just be sure to harvest the outer leaves so the inner ones can grow out.
Lettuce
Lettuce is an easy plant to care for indoors as well. It requires up to four hours of sunlight at most. Just be sure to give it at least a half-gallon of soil for the lettuce to grow in. Also be sure the pot can be well drained. The roots are shallow so you should have little to no trouble with keeping it alive. You may have to give it a little bit of compost every couple of weeks to make sure it’s well fed, but other than that you should be fine.
Carrots
This is another simple plant you may enjoy growing. All you need is a window box that is a 1 ½ feet deep and wide. The potting mix you use will have to be a hummus-rich one. Just be sure the soil is well drained and is kept damp. Carrots do need some sunlight, but once they’re big enough, they’re easy to harvest.
Mushrooms
This may come as a surprise, but mushrooms are excellent if you’re really pressed for space. You can even grow them in a laundry basket if you need to! They are an excellent source of vitamin C and fiber. They even have a couple of cancer-fighting compounds that are great for your health. All you need to do is purchase a mushroom growing kit in order to get started.
Tomatoes
This is another plant great for indoors, but they do require quite a bit of sunlight. Just be sure to give them a large pot that can hold up to 3-5 gallons of soil. Be sure to water the plant enough so the soil is moist, but not damp. You will have to turn the pot so all sides of the tomato plant gets equal sunlight.
It’s actually very easy to grow a number of vegetables inside. All it requires is a little bit of research and some general knowledge of what plants need.
