Five Steps to Properly Cleaning Plant Containers

Before the spring rolls around and it’s time to start gardening, it is important to thoroughly clean plant containers. This way you’ll be fully prepared and it’s one less thing for you to take care of.  By starting off your gardening with clean containers, you are ensuring that your seeds will grow to be both strong and healthy plants.

Five Steps to Properly Cleaning Plant Containers

Step One: Take a look at all your containers. Some may have cracks, chips or just be plain brittle . If that’s the case, throw them away or recycle them if possible. They won’t do any good for you. Then, take the rest of containers and put them to the side. Those are the ones that will need to be cleaned.

Step Two: Put together a weak solution of either household bleach or detergent. This solution will be used to get rid of any bacteria, viruses or fungus that may be growing at the bottoms of your containers.

Step Three: With gloves on, grab a stiff brush. Then, place the stiff brush into the solution that you just created in step two and begin scrubbing the inside and outside of each and every container. You may need to dip your brush into the solution multiple times to really get the pot clean. e

Step Four: Once you feel the containers are cleaned well, leave them in a spot where they can fully dry. You must do this before storing them. That’s because moisture can promote the growth of bacteria and mildew. You rather be safe than sorry so make sure the container is dry first.

Step Five: Last, you will need to store your containers. You can leave these containers in anywhere from the shed to your garage. Pick a place that works best for you, although you should always stick far away from any area that gets wet. Now, when you store them, lay down the containers in neat piles. Preferably, the containers should be grouped by size.  By organizing your containers, you will make things much easier for yourself when you have to gather up your containers again in the spring.

We hope this makes cleaning plant containers easy for you!
